Santa Cruz de Tenerife, Spain, Feb 26 (EFE).- This Spanish island off the coast of Africa laid on a fireworks display Tuesday night to welcome stars such as Gloria Estefan, Juan Luis Guerra, Juanes and Alejandro Fernandez for the annual Cadena Dial music awards gala.
The Spanish radio network created the prizes in 1996 to honor outstanding achievement in Latino music.
Along with the fireworks, honorees were greeted by hundreds of fans gathered outside the auditorium in Tenerife, the most populous of the Canary Islands.
Receiving one of the warmest welcomes was Cuban-American singer Gloria Estefan, who was accompanied by her husband, producer and empresario Emilio Estefan.
“Every time I come across an accent in the world that I believe is Cuban it turns out to be Canarian,” Gloria Estefan said, expressing gratitude for always having had “the affection and the support of Spaniards.”
Another crowd favorite was Dominican singer-songwriter Juan Luis Guerra, who said he had “many memories” of Spain and especially the Canaries, said he planned to include the archipelago in a tour planned for next summer.
Colombia’s Juanes thanked his Spanish fans and remarked that while the evening was “quite chilly,” Tenerife was home to “marvelous people who surmount any problem of temperature.”
