Thousands of laid-off government employees in Puerto Rico will be doing the conga for free, thanks to Gloria Estefan.

The Cuban-born singer bought some 2,000 tickets for her weekend concert and they will distributed by raffle among the nearly 17,000 workers who learned last month that they will lose their jobs beginning Nov. 6.

Stefan bought all the remaining upper-level tickets – at $40 each – as a gift to those who were affected, said Harold Rosario, the singer’s spokesman in Puerto Rico, said Thursday. (more…)

The White House is taking on a Latin flair next week.

President Barack Obama plans to host a concert next Tuesday to honor Hispanic musical heritage.

The White House says Marc Anthony, Gloria Estefan and Jose Feliciano plan to join the event. Other entertainers will include Jimmy Smits, Pete Escovedo, George Lopez, Thalia, Los Lobos, Tito “El Bambino” and Aventura. Sheila E. will lead the house band. (more…)

GLORIA Estefan’s background is about as Latin American as they get. Growing up in Cuba, her father was the bodyguard of President Fulgencio Batista. But, during the Cuban Revolution, her family fled to Miami.

Desperate to learn English, she turned to an unusual source for help – Gerry Marsden. Listening to his records, she gradually learnt to sing along.

“One of my all-time favourite songs is Ferry Across the Mersey by Gerry and the Pacemakers,” says Gloria. “When I was a little girl my mother would take me to the laundromat and that song would play on the radio. To this day, whenever I hear the song, it takes me back to that time and I always remember the scent of laundromat.” (more…)

The Miami Dolphins have a new soundtrack, a sound that is as hot as September home games.

Gloria Estefan, the multiplatinum recording artist who helped introduce the world to South Florida’s Latin groove with the Miami Sound Machine, and her husband, Emilio, were officially named minority owners of the NFL franchise Thursday morning.

”This is thrilling, to be part of the hometown team,” Gloria Estefan said. “But don’t worry, we won’t be calling any plays.” (more…)

Singer Gloria Estefan and her husband, producer Emilio Estefan, are buying a “very small” ownership stake in the NFL team, a person familiar with the deal said Monday. The person requested anonymity because the deal won’t be announced until Thursday by owner Stephen Ross.

Seven-time Grammy winner Gloria Estefan has had hits with Miami Sound Machine and as a solo artist. Ross began a partnership in May with Jimmy Buffett’s Margaritaville enterprise, which includes Land Shark Lager.

Buffett has yet to accept Ross’ invitation to become a minority owner, but the Dolphins’ stadium has been renamed Land Shark Stadium for this season. Buffett wrote a song for the team and will be featured at tailgate parties, Ross has said. (more…)

Gloria Estefan is the latest act to sign up for this year’s Liverpool Summer Pops Festival, with an Echo Arena date on Monday July 27.

“I’m really looking forward to coming to such a musical city like Liverpool,” said Gloria, 51.
