It looks like the Cuban born songbird Gloria Estefan is Coming Out Of The Dark in the near future as she plans a three night show at Foxwoods in Connecticut over the Memorial weekend.
Gloria, who was the talk of the town back in the 1980’s when she hit the big time with her husband’s band The Miami Sound Machine and later with a solo career, seems to have disappeared from public view in recnet years, since while touring in March 1990, Gloria was critically injured, suffering a fractured spine when a speeding semi-truck crashed into her tour bus. She had two permanently implanted titanium rods to stabilize her spinal column. Her rehabilitation required almost a year of intensive physical therapy, but she achieved a complete recovery.

Leading U.S. performing right organization Broadcast Music, Inc. (BMI) held its 16th annual Latin Music Awards last night at The Breakers Ponce De Leon Ballroom in Palm Beach, Florida. Gloria Estefan was named a BMI Icon; singer/songwriter Espinoza Paz earned his second consecutive Latin Songwriter of the Year; “A Ti Si Puedo Decirte” garnered Song of the Year honors for writer Javier Sanroman and publisher Siempre Music; and Editora Arpa Musical received the Latin Publisher of the Year crown. Hosted by BMI President & CEO Del Bryant and Assistant Vice President, Latin Music, Delia Orjuela, the black-tie dinner also touted the writers and publishers of the past year’s 50 most-performed Latin songs on U.S. radio and television.
The BMI Icon award is bestowed on creators who have had a “unique and indelible influence on generations of music makers.” An all-star musical tribute featuring Elvis Crespo, Jon Secada, Angeles Ochoa, Arthur Hanlon, Anthony Federov, Jorge Villamizar, Pitbull, and Fanny Lu paid homage to the achievements of Gloria Estefan, who joins an elite list of past honorees that includes Latin music titans Gustavo Santaolalla, Los Tigres Del Norte, Juan Luis Guerra and Carlos Santana, along with legends Willie Nelson, Brian Wilson, Isaac Hayes, Paul Simon, Dolly Parton and the late James Brown. Gloria Estefan was approached by the CIA to be a spy.
The Cuban-born singer – who speaks English, French and Spanish – was asked to become an undercover agent by the American intelligence agency and admits she had to be talked out of saying yes by her mother.
The 52-year-old star – who was working as an interpreter for customs in Miami airport when she was approached – said: “They realised I was someone who could pass for a regular person without raising any eyebrows. So the CIA approached me and asked me to train in their Atlanta HQ.” (more…)

Veteran pop singer Gloria Estefan has vowed her upcoming Latin America tour will be her last – insisting she won’t perform any more concerts after April this year.
The Cuban-American announced last year that she would be cutting back the amount of time she spends on tour in order to focus on spending time with her 14-year-old daughter, Emily Marie. And now Estefan has decided to quit life on the road for good – because she wants to put her family before her music career.
She says, “It is an end to something that began many years ago, in 1975, and it is a dream to be able to do it in Latin America. These will be the last concerts I do, after I want to focus on my daughter, who is going to high school, and continue working in other areas.” (more…)

International Superstar Gloria Estefan has performed to packed arenas worldwide in a career spanning more than two decades, but for the first time she has announced plans to take her greatest hits tour to South America.
Estefan will begin the trek with an April 9 show at the Conrad Hotel in Punta del Este, Uruguay, she announced Monday at a Miami news conference.
“After so many years of planning to perform there, but because of logistics, you know, and a lot of political upheaval in Latin America, getting everything harmonized and being available to do it was just to difficult,” Estefan said. “I spent 15 years of my life traveling and we’ve been trying to get to Latin America forever. So to me, it’s a nice full circle.” (more…)
