Emilio and Gloria Estefan gain stake in Miami Dolphins

The Miami Dolphins have a new soundtrack, a sound that is as hot as September home games.

Gloria Estefan, the multiplatinum recording artist who helped introduce the world to South Florida’s Latin groove with the Miami Sound Machine, and her husband, Emilio, were officially named minority owners of the NFL franchise Thursday morning.

”This is thrilling, to be part of the hometown team,” Gloria Estefan said. “But don’t worry, we won’t be calling any plays.”

The Dolphins formally announced the deal at a ceremony that lived up to majority owner Stephen Ross’ vision of combining glitz with gridiron. Before the event, the Dolphins piped Estefan’s most popular songs, like Rhythm is Gonna Get You and Turn the Beat Around through Land Shark Stadium’s concourse.

They took the stage to a video presentation that wove Estefan concert video with Dolphins highlights from their AFC East championship 2008 season.

”This is probably one of my happiest moments and one of the things I’m most proud about,” Ross said. “The team is a public trust. I wanted to bring ownership that would represent the community. There’s no community that has the diversity that South Florida has.”

Ross likes show-business personalities and likes to make announcements with a show-business flair and timing. He began speaking with the Estefans three months ago about getting a small piece of the Dolphins.

Now, he has linked the Dolphins to two of South Florida’s most famous entertainers — Jimmy Buffett, whose music symbolizes the relaxed Florida Keys lifestyle, and Gloria Estefan, whose music could symbolize South Florida’s ethnic metamorphosis over the past 25 years.

In early May, the team announced Land Shark Lager — part of Buffett’s Margaritaville label — had been awarded the stadium’s naming rights for the 2009 season. Buffett is also expected to buy a portion of the team.

Emilio, Gloria Estefan buying stake in Dolphins

The Dolphins are merging with Miami Sound Machine and Margaritaville.
Singer Gloria Estefan and her husband, producer Emilio Estefan, are buying a “very small” ownership stake in the NFL team, a person familiar with the deal said Monday. The person requested anonymity because the deal won’t be announced until Thursday by owner Stephen Ross.

Seven-time Grammy winner Gloria Estefan has had hits with Miami Sound Machine and as a solo artist. Ross began a partnership in May with Jimmy Buffett’s Margaritaville enterprise, which includes Land Shark Lager.

Buffett has yet to accept Ross’ invitation to become a minority owner, but the Dolphins’ stadium has been renamed Land Shark Stadium for this season. Buffett wrote a song for the team and will be featured at tailgate parties, Ross has said.

It’s unclear whether the Estefans will have a role in Dolphins entertainment. Miami Sound Machine brought a fusion of Latin and pop to the American masses with hits such as Conga and Rhythm Is Gonna Get You, and Emilio Estefan has also produced for such artists as Shakira and Ricky Martin.

The Estefans will be among the few Hispanics to hold an ownership stake in an NFL team. Gloria Estefan came to the United States at age 2 when her family fled Cuba shortly after Fidel Castro’s revolution, and she has sold more than 90 million records.

Ross, a New York real estate billionaire, completed his purchase of the Dolphins in January from Wayne Huizenga.

The Dolphins confirmed only that the Estefans and Ross will make a “major announcement” Thursday on behalf of the Dolphins.

Gloria Estefan to perform at Liverpool ECHO Arena

Gloria Estefan is the latest act to sign up for this year’s Liverpool Summer Pops Festival, with an Echo Arena date on Monday July 27.

“I’m really looking forward to coming to such a musical city like Liverpool,” said Gloria, 51.

Born Gloria Fajardo in Havana, Cuba, she escaped Fidel Castro’s regime for a life in Miami.

Her career began almost by chance, singing at a wedding with a local band called Miami Latin Boys. There she met Emilio Estefan, joined the band and they created would be called the ‘Miami sound’. Soon after, the band changed its name to Miami Sound Machine.

They went on to win five Grammys and sell more than 70 million records.
